Here’s my portrait of actor/stuntman Mark Atkin who was Richard Armitage’s Scale Double for Thorin Oakenshield in „The Hobbit“-trilogy. Mark worked very closely with Richard and studied his movement and demeanour in order to make us unaware of him standing in for Armitage. He did a wonderful job, but just because he had to be invisible doesn’t mean he should be invisible for us, who loved these movies and characters so dearly.
That’s why I decided to create this digital painting of him. To show that he is as much Thorin as Richard Armitage is. Thorin isn’t just one face and one body. Movie-Thorin is an idea, sprung from Tolkiens mind and refined by Philippa Boyens, Fran Welsh and Sir Peter Jackson and embodied by Richard Armitage, Mana Davis and Mark Atkin.
