#ThrowbackThursday
This was not exactly Cosplay… but my portrayal of the song „Herr Spiegelman“ by the Portuguese Metal-band „Moonspell“ about seven years ago. Yes, I know it may sound strange… to portray a song. Or let’s say, I was inspired by it to do the photograph.
I’ve loved this song since I first heard it 1996 when I was fifteen years old. Ever since I come back to listening to this it from time to time. It has this happy tune at the beginning which soon gets something else, something darker. From the happy setting of a circus or a funfair to the stomping basstunes, which remind me of a heartbeat, faster and faster and erratic, haunting – while the singer recites a passage from Patrick Süskind’s „Das Parfum“, a literary masterpiece written by a genius.
The song gets more and more power, guitars, bass, drums and the singer’s unique voice. There are a few people out there who say he can’t sing, but I disagree. It is true, he often tries too hard with the barriton voice and not seldom he reaches the bottom, meaning one can hear that he clearly can’t go any deeper though the song may require it. For me it’s okay, it is his unique style, a rough, dirty and unfinished style. It is slightly disturbing the harmony, which, in this case, is great. The screaming/growling is perfect.
The lyrics to the song are:
Look Me in the eyes and drown…
„Everyone considered the man in the blue jacket
as the most beautiful human being they have ever seen:
nuns saw on him the Messiah in flesh;
Satan’s adorers the lustrous Prince of Darkness;
philosophers the Supreme Being;
young females an enchanted prince;
Men an ideal reflection of themselves.“
Patrick Skind: The Perfume („Story Of An Assassin“)
Look Me in the eyes and drown…
I am your vulture, your immoral sculpture
Mirrorman, who understands
I know you, I am you
Your fantasy and reality
I wait for you to welcome you in my dreamworld
My water-eyes
Look Me in the eyes
Touch me in the eyes and dream…
